The European Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is one of the most important sustainability measures introduced in recent years. The aim is to reduce global CO\u2082 emissions and promote fair competition between European and non-European producers. The regulations have a direct impact on the import of steel and aluminum products into the EU, including materials used in scaffolding systems, such as tubes, couplers and construction profiles. <\/p>\n

What is CBAM?<\/h3>\n

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is a policy tool designed to prevent \"carbon leakage\" \u2013 the relocation of production to regions with less stringent climate rules. CBAM imposes a CO\u2082 tax on imported products from sectors with high energy consumption and high carbon emissions, including aluminum, iron and steel. <\/p>\n

The system ensures fair competition by creating equal environmental standards for EU and non-EU producers. Importers are required to report the embodied CO\u2082 emissions of their imported materials and to purchase CBAM certificates that reflect these emissions since 1st January 2026. <\/p>\n

CBAM has been in a transitional phase (2023-2025). During this period, companies are required to submit quarterly reports on the carbon footprint of their imports, although no financial levy is yet applied. From 2026, the mechanism will become fully operational and importers will have to pay the carbon border levy. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Materials that are produced using renewable energy sources such as hydropower or solar energy, on the other hand, benefit from lower emissions and lower costs. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
